Conversations with a toddler

Not technically a conversation. More, a “where does he get this stuff?” moment.

Husband has his clothes closet downstairs, and yesterday he left kidlet in the living room to go downstairs to finish dressing for the day. (I was half-snoozing in bed still.) (This makes me sound very decadent, and I might agree, except that said toddler still wakes up at least once, often twice at night, and I’m the night-settler. So, I would feel more decadent if I was getting 8 uninterrupted hours of sleep, but since I’m not, I just feel tired.)

Upon his return to the living room to collect the toddler for daycare, toddler turns to his dad and says, “Nice shirt!”

This kid cracks me up.

(Also, Monday I was over at NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia’s blog offering my thoughts on the documentary 12th & Delaware. Go read, maybe they’ll ask me to write more!)

Conversations with kidlet

This one transpired between kidlet and his dad, while his dad was getting him buckled into his car seat after dinner last night.

Kidlet: Ball! Ball!
Dad: Here’s your ball.
Kidlet: Throws ball out of the car, into the parking lot. “Uh oh!”
Dad: Yeah, uh oh. You threw the ball, buddy.
Kidlet: Ball! Ball!
Dad: Okay, hang on, I have to get it, cuz you threw it.
Kidlet: Go! Go!

Demanding little toddler.

Toddlers sure are clever

Apparently kidlet knows where his dad’s socks are kept.

Yesterday while we were getting ready to leave the house, kidlet grabbed one of his dad’s shoes and started chasing him around the house saying, “Shoe, shoe! Shoe, shoe!” which is kidlet-code for, “Put these shoes on your feet.” (Or, if he’s carrying his OWN shoes, it’s code for, “Put these shoes on MY feet.”)

So, his dad said to him, “Kidlet, I need my socks before I can put my shoes on.”

Kidlet put the shoe down and disappeared. He reappeared carrying a pair of socks for his dad.

Do you think this means we can get him to help put laundry away?

The best toys

are sometimes the ones they find lying around.

For instance, the dog gets her water in a 1 gallon paint bucket. Here it does double duty as a hat:

bucket on head

So proud!

In other news – I went to the park again today. This time in the afternoon. There was a definitely different crowd in the afternoon, and they were much more approachable. I had a couple of nice conversations with a few other moms. It didn’t kill me, I didn’t break out in hives, and I’ll probably even go back.

Progress, no?
